Why? is an American indie hip hop group from Cincinnati, Ohio, formed by brothers Jonathan and Josiah Wolf, Doug McDiarmid, Mark Wilson and Matt Meldon. The group was formed in 1996 to fuse hip hop music with alternative rock and folk. They first rose to prominence with their album Elephant Eyelash, released in 2005. This album combined the sound of hip-hop and alternative music to create an interesting experimental sound. The group's 2009 album "Eskimo Snow" emphasizes guitar-driven soundscapes and heavily layered vocals and effects. They have released nine albums since 2003, the most recent being Aokohio released in 2019. Why? has toured extensively throughout their career, including a sold-out performance at the 2017 SXSW Music Festival. They have been cited as an influence by many indie and experimental rock bands.
