About Makossa
Makossa is a genre of Cameroonian music influenced by jazz, soul, and Latin music. The genre was created in the 1970s by a group of Cameroonian musicians, including Henri Dikongue and Manu Dibango. Since then, it's become one of the most popular genres in the country and has been exported to many other parts of Africa and beyond. In recent years, Makossa has been associated with contemporary African-influenced dance music. Makossa songs are usually structured around call and response vocals and traditional rhythms such as mbalax, bikutsi, and afrobeat. The sound is dominated by electric bass and electric guitars, but acoustic instruments are also frequently used. Makossa has been popularized by several international artists, including remixed versions of Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa" and Salif Keita's "Souvent".
