Konchar, 30, is entering his eighth NBA season. Last year, he split time between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Utah Jazz, averaging 4.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists over 56 games. Notably, during his 26-game stint with the Jazz, he improved his performance, averaging 5.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game. His versatility allows him to guard multiple positions and contribute significantly on the boards, attributes that align well with the Knicks' defensive strategies.
The signing comes after Konchar's brief tenure with the Minnesota Timberwolves, who waived him in late August following a trade from Utah. Prior to that, he spent the majority of his career with the Grizzlies, where he developed a reputation as a reliable role player.
The Knicks faced competition from several Eastern Conference rivals, including the Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, and Toronto Raptors, all of whom expressed interest in Konchar. Ultimately, he chose to join New York, providing the team with additional wing depth alongside players like Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, OG Anunoby, Jordan Clarkson, and Landry Shamet.
This acquisition brings the Knicks' roster to 14 players on standard contracts, leaving one spot open as they approach training camp. With approximately $3.2 million remaining below the second apron, the team maintains flexibility for potential future moves.
