James Valentine, a cherished Australian musician and ABC radio presenter, has passed away at the age of 64 following a two-year battle with cancer. Valentine, renowned for his engaging and humorous style, hosted ABC Radio Sydney's Afternoons program for over two decades, becoming a beloved voice in Australian broadcasting.
Born on September 12, 1961, in Ballarat, Victoria, Valentine began his career as a talented saxophonist. He performed with notable bands such as Jo Jo Zep & the Falcons, Models, and Absent Friends, contributing significantly to Australia's music scene in the 1980s. Transitioning to broadcasting in the late 1980s, Valentine brought his musical sensibilities to radio, creating a unique and interactive experience for listeners.
In March 2024, Valentine publicly announced his diagnosis of oesophageal cancer. Despite undergoing treatment, he continued to connect with his audience until June 2025, when he stepped back due to the progression of his illness. In February 2026, he officially retired to focus on his health and spend time with his family.
Valentine chose to end his life through voluntary assisted dying at home, surrounded by his loved ones. His family released a statement expressing gratitude for the option, noting that he remained calm, dignified, and even humorous until the end.
