About Buena Vista Social Club
Buena Vista Social Club is a musical collaboration of Cuban musicians and singers founded by Juan de Marcos González in 1996. The group achieved international fame with their self-entitled debut album released in 1997. Produced by Ry Cooder, the Grammy-winning album draws upon traditional Cuban styles such as son, bolero, and trova. The subsequent tour of world capitals, recorded in Wim Wenders film Buena Vista Social Club, helped introduce an international audience to the legendary musicians and singers of 1950s Cuba. The collective released additional studio albums in subsequent years, however, their collaborations with other artists, such as Rubén González, Ry Cooder, Ibrahim Ferrer and Eliades Ochoa, helped preserve classic Cuban music. The band continues to tour today, with many of its members performing as solo artists as well as together as a collective.
