James Murphy is an American electronic musician, singer, songwriter, DJ, and remixer from Baltimore, Maryland. He is best known as the lead singer of the band LCD Soundsystem and co-founder of label DFA Records. He has also done remixes of tracks by bands such as Nine Inch Nails, Nine Inch Nails, The Rapture, and Gorillaz. Through his own productions and remixes, Murphy has influenced the direction of dance music within the indie and alternative music scenes. He has also produced or co-produced albums for other artists, including Arcade Fire and Odd Future. Murphy has also collaborated with a number of different musicians, including Maynard James Keenan of Tool, Sharon Van Etten, and Hot Chip. He has been active since 1998, releasing four albums with LCD Soundsystem and three solo albums. In 2014, Murphy announced that he was ceasing recording and releasing music with LCD Soundsystem.
