The London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) is a leading British orchestra founded in 1932 by cellist Sir Thomas Beecham. It is considered one of the foremost symphony orchestras in the world, providing music ranging from the classical and romantic to more contemporary works. Supported by Royal Charter, the orchestra is based at its own premises, Southbank Centre, and performs its own series of concerts in London's Royal Festival Hall and other major venues across Europe, Asia and the USA. The LPO also produces a formidable range of recordings and film scores as well as providing a world-renowned education programme and outreach activities. It is also historically important for having employed the first African-American orchestral members.
