Moondog (real name Louis Hardin) was an American musician, composer, mystic, and poet who created an artistic and innovative style of music. He emerged in New York City's experimental music scene of the 1940s and 1950s. After producing his first album in 1953, Moondog recorded over 20 albums in a range of genres, from classical, jazz, and symphonic to animal sounds and avant-garde. His work has been released on multiple labels and received recognition from multiple notable composers and musicians. Moondog was known for being an eccentric figure in the music community, often dressing and performing as a Viking. He was even sighted in the city dressed in a robe and carrying a spear. His music managed to be both off-kilter and surprisingly accessible. Moondog was seen as an artistic inspiration to both his peers and younger generations throughout his career. He passed away in 1999.
