Kyrsten Sinema is an American politician and attorney who has served as the senior United States Senator from Arizona since January 2019. A member of the Democratic Party until she became an independent in December 2022, she previously represented Arizona’s 9th congressional district in the House of Representatives from 2013 to 2019. Sinema made history as the first openly bisexual member of the U.S. Senate and is known for her centrist and independent-minded approach to policymaking. Prior to her tenure in Congress, she served in the Arizona State Legislature and worked as a social worker and adjunct professor.
