About bēd
Bēd, often referred to as the Venerable Bede, was an English Benedictine monk and scholar of the early 8th century. Born around 673 AD in the Kingdom of Northumbria, he spent most of his life at the monastery of Saint Peter at Monkwearmouth and its companion monastery, Saint Paul's, in Jarrow. Renowned for his scholarly works, Bede is best known for "Ecclesiastical History of the English People," a crucial source for understanding early English history. He was a prolific writer and translator, playing a significant role in making Latin and Greek texts accessible to his contemporaries. Bede's intellectual legacy earned him the title "Father of English History," and he was canonized as a saint in 1899.
