Frau Troffea was a historical figure who is best known for her role in the bizarre 1518 dancing plague in Strasbourg, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. Her spontaneous and relentless dancing in July of that year sparked a mass dancing mania that engulfed dozens of people. Despite the fervent whirl, which reportedly lasted days, the outbreak was not met with immediate understanding, as local authorities initially encouraged more dancing in hopes of exhausting the participants. The event remains a curious episode in medieval European history, often studied in relation to phenomena such as mass hysteria or stress-induced psychogenic illness.
