Juan Atkins is a pioneering electronic music artist and one of the founders of Detroit techno. Regarded as one of the “universal originators” of techno, Atkins used electronic instruments including Roland drum machines, sequencers, and synthesizers to create a sound based on robotic funk. Atkins worked primarily alone in his home studio in the early days of Detroit techno, producing electro-disco cuts credited to various projects including Cybotron, eventually launching his own record label, Metroplex. He also collaborated with producers including Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, contributing to the emergence of Detroit techno as an international phenomenon. Atkins continues to both tour and create music, most recently turning his focus to ambient and world music. He continues to be a key influence in Detroit techno and electronic music in general.
