Actress is an alias created by the UK producer and composer Darren J. Cunningham, born in 1977. In the early 2000s, his electroacoustic work incorporated influences from jazz, hip hop, and dubstep, and explored the shifting boundaries of the musical experience. Released primarily through the Honest Jon's record label, his albums have been praised for their unique sounds and intricate, abstract compositions. He has included classical styles and neoclassical aesthetics, as well as drones, basslines, ambient soundscapes, and orchestral arrangements. By merging digital and acoustic elements, Actress has crafted a distinct sound that has gained appreciation from both critics and audiences alike. He has collaborated and performed with many of electronic music's key figures, such as Aphex Twin, Burial, and Flying Lotus.
