ESG is an influential Afro-American post-punk band from the South Bronx in New York City. They formed in 1978 and were initially inspired by the sound of disco and hip-hop coming out of the local clubs. ESG quickly developed their own sound mixing punk, funk, dub, and jazz which has been highly influential in the genres of electronic and dance music. They released their self-titled debut album in 1981 to great critical acclaim, helped to define a post-punk funk that is still felt today. They released 3 further albums and during their career they have toured with the likes of the Clash, Sonic Youth, and the Pop Group. They continue to occasionally perform and feature as sample material in numerous modern hip-hop, pop, and electronic tracks.
