Orson Welles was an American actor, director, writer and producer who became famous during the 1930s and 1940s as an innovative creator of acclaimed films. He rose to prominence with the film 'Citizen Kane', the most acclaimed film of all time by the American Film Institute. His other major films include 'The Magnificent Ambersons', 'The Lady from Shanghai', 'Touch of Evil' and 'Chimes at Midnight'. Welles was also a radio performer with his 1938 adaptation of H.G. Wells' 'The War of the Worlds' which caused widespread panic due to its realism. His career changed direction in the 1950s when he was hired to star in his own television series, although his later films were commercially unsuccessful and less critical acclaimed than his earlier projects. Welles' achievements in the theater, film and radio earned him the title of “one of the most renowned figures in the history of the film industry.”
