The electronic music community is mourning the loss of Matt Tolfrey, the renowned DJ, producer, and founder of Leftroom Records, who has passed away at the age of 44. The news was confirmed by fellow DJ Damian Lazarus via an Instagram post earlier today.

Born in England and raised in Bahrain, Tolfrey returned to the UK at 16, settling in the Midlands. He began his DJ career in Worcester before moving to Nottingham for university, where he became a prominent figure in the local dance music scene. His residencies at The Bomb and Stealth clubs, along with his 'Junk Funk' radio show on Fly FM, solidified his reputation as a leading DJ.

In 2005, Tolfrey founded Leftroom Records, aiming to release experimental house and techno music. The label quickly gained recognition, leading to a residency at Shoreditch's T Bar, a pivotal venue during the mid-2000s minimal techno movement. Over the years, Tolfrey collaborated with artists like D.Ramirez, Lee Curtiss, Kate Simko, and Geddes. His 2012 debut album, 'Word Of Mouth,' featured the track 'The Truth,' co-produced with house music pioneer Marshall Jefferson.

Tolfrey's influence extended globally, with performances at renowned venues such as Berlin's Panorama Bar, Miami's Space, and Ibiza's DC-10. He also contributed to fabric's esteemed mix series with 'Fabric 81' in 2015. In recent years, he focused on his One 800 management company, representing artists like Archie Hamilton and Fleur Shore, and served as A&R for The Martinez Brothers' Cuttin’ Headz label.

He is survived by his ex-partner Hayley and their two daughters, Aria and Beau. The cause of death has not been confirmed.

The music world remembers Matt Tolfrey for his significant contributions to electronic music and his dedication to fostering community within the industry.
