About Mulatu Astatke
Mulatu Astatke is an Ethiopian jazz musician and composer who has earned the nickname, "the father of Ethio-jazz". Born in 1943, he has played the vibraphone and other instruments and had a long career in music. He often tunes his vibraphone in unconventional ways and mixes traditional Ethiopian music with jazz and Latin music. He is known for his pioneering of Ethio-jazz in the 1960s and 1970s and notably, he composed the soundtrack of the 2005 film, “Broken Flowers”, directed by Jim Jarmusch. His music has also been featured in the popular video game “Grand Theft Auto IV” and he has performed worldwide including in Brazil, North America, Russia, and Europe. Mulatu has won several awards, solidifying his place in music as one of the most influential contemporary Ethiopian musicians.
