Cesária Evora was a singer and musician from the nation of Cape Verde. Her unique sultry style and powerful voice earned her the nicknames 'Barefoot Diva' and 'Queen of Morna'. She was known for singing several styles of folk music, including morna and coladeira, as well as fina, the re-invented version of the sung poetry of the rural Cape Verdean people. Battling poverty and with the lack of resources in her home nation, she achieved international stardom after signing a record deal in 1988. Evora went on to release 14 studio albums, her most famous being her 1992 release “Miss Perfumado”, and gained international recognition and awards, including the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Evora passed away in 2011, but her legacy of powerful and stirring vocals continues to live on.
