Poncho Sanchez, born on October 30, 1951, in Laredo, Texas, is a celebrated American conguero (conga player), Latin jazz bandleader, and composer. He grew up in a musical household in Norwalk, California, where he was exposed to a blend of Afro-Cuban music, jazz, and rhythm and blues. Sanchez gained recognition as a member of Cal Tjader's band in the 1970s, eventually launching his own successful career as a bandleader. Known for his vibrant performances and recordings, Poncho Sanchez has been a key figure in popularizing Latin jazz, earning a Grammy Award in 1999 for his album "Latin Soul."
