Souad Massi is an Algerian singer, songwriter, and guitarist. She is most well known for her social and political activism, highlighting the plight of women in her music. She started singing professionally in her teens in France in the late Nineties, but achieved international renown in 2002 with her critically acclaimed debut album Raoui. Since then Massi has released four more albums, with her most recent being 2014’s El Mutakallimun. Across her career, Massi has won an array of awards, including a Kora Award for ‘Best Artist from North Africa’ and a Victoire de la Musique award for best world music artist. In 2018, Massi was awarded a prestigious Algerian knighthood for her contribution to North African culture.
