Xasthur is an influential American black metal project formed by multi-instrumentalist Scott Conner, known by his pseudonym Malefic, in 1995. Based in Alhambra, California, Xasthur gained a cult following for its bleak and atmospheric soundscapes, characterized by lo-fi production, haunting melodies, and despairing themes. Originally a solo project, Xasthur remained at the forefront of the U.S. black metal scene until 2010 when Conner announced its disbandment. In 2015, Xasthur was revived but shifted stylistically towards acoustic and dark folk music, reflecting Conner's evolving artistic vision.
