On September 18, 2025, the Woody Guthrie Center announced that the iconic Irish rock band U2 will receive the 2025 Woody Guthrie Prize. This prestigious award honors artists who embody the spirit of Woody Guthrie by using their music to advocate for social justice and equality. Bono and The Edge are set to accept the award on behalf of the band during a ceremony at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa on October 21, 2025.

U2, formed in Dublin in 1976, has a storied history of addressing social issues through their music. From early works like 'War' and 'Pride (In the Name of Love)'—a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—to anthems such as 'One' and 'Walk On,' the band has consistently used their platform to promote messages of love, hope, justice, and human dignity. Their commitment extends beyond music; the band members have supported organizations like (RED) and The ONE Campaign, both co-founded by Bono, and Music Rising, co-founded by The Edge.

Cady Shaw, Senior Director of the Woody Guthrie Center, stated, 'U2 embodies the mission of the Woody Guthrie Prize, using music to confront injustice and inspire action.' The upcoming ceremony will also feature remarks from Woody Guthrie’s granddaughter, Anna Canoni, who will express her family's appreciation for U2 as standard-bearers of Guthrie’s legacy.

The Woody Guthrie Prize has previously been awarded to notable figures such as Pete Seeger, Mavis Staples, Kris Kristofferson, and Bruce Springsteen. U2's recognition continues this tradition, highlighting the band's enduring impact on music and social activism.
