Courtney Pine is an English jazz musician considered to be one of the pioneers of modern British jazz. He is best known for his technique on the saxophone, blending contemporary jazz, reggae, dub and hip hop styles. His career began in the early 80s playing in local jazz clubs, and he has since gone on to have a highly successful international career as both a performer and producer. His 1993 album, Journey to the Urge Within, is credited with breaking down barriers for British jazz music, and also won him a MOBO award for best jazz act. He has released more than twelve records, played with various artists, including Björk, Sade, and Cheb Mami, and won numerous awards. Courtney Pine’s work has been hugely influential in the UK’s jazz community and continues to inspire young musicians.
