Matt Berninger is a singer-songwriter and the lead vocalist of the popular indie rock band The National. He began his career as a house painter and advertising executive before forming The National in 1999. In the twenty years since, The National have produced seven albums, all of which have been critically acclaimed for their combination of atmospheric indie rock and melancholic lyrics. Berninger's songwriting, vocal style, and baritone range have been heavily praised by critics and fellow musicians alike. Outside of his work with The National, Berninger has appeared on records by a variety of other artists, including David Martin, Brent Knopf, and Lord Huron. He also released a solo album in 2020 titled Serpentine Prison. Berninger is currently heavily involved in a number of side projects in film and music, pushing the boundaries of his craft and cementing himself as a modern icon of alternative rock.
