Pharaoh Sanders is an American tenor saxophonist known for his "free spiritual" style of jazz music. During the 1960s, his influence was immensely significant in jazz circles and his career has grown to more than 150 albums and five Grammy nominations over the decades. Sanders originally studied under alto saxophone legend Ornette Coleman in Los Angeles and gravitated towards the avant-garde jazz movement. His improvisational style heavily includes the use of dissonance, intense soundscapes, and profoundly distinctive crying out melodies. He is one of the most respected saxophonists and has worked with some of the genre's best, including Max Roach, Archie Shepp, Sun Ra, and John Coltrane. Sanders is also known for his unique use of multiphonics, in which he produces more than one tone simultaneously.
