About The Members
The Members are a London-based British punk/new wave band formed in 1976. Led by the rock poet Nigel Bennett, their sound was defined by their raucous and ironic lyrics, and Bennett's ambitious songwriting. The band's biggest hit was 'The Sound of the Suburbs' in 1979, which topped the UK Indie chart for a brief time. They also released two albums, 1979's At the Chelsea Nightclub and 1980's 1980-The Choice Is Yours. The Members toured widely, mostly in England, and had support from such acts as the Sex Pistols, The Clash, and The Damned. Their influence has been highly significant, especially in the punk and post-punk scenes. The Members were also a pioneering force in combining new styles such as punk and funk and have recently been credited with helping to start two-tone ska.
