The Kronos Quartet is an American string quartet renowned for their unique interpretation and diverse repertoire of modern contemporary, electronic, world music, and jazz styles. The quartet, formed in 1973, was the first performing ensemble to explore explicitly the use of non-classical and experimental music. They are often associated with the development of the “multicultural” -inspired world music and their arrangements and recordings of such works. The quartet is especially known for numerous recordings of minimalist music from writers such as Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley, and their unique and experimental interpretations of music from a variety of genres, including rock and pop. In addition to their classical and experimental repertoire, the quartet has worked with many diverse musical figures such as rock stars Dolly Parton, Björk, and David Bowie, Middle Eastern and South Asian musicians, and filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. The Kronos Quartet has won many awards and accolades, including four
